Overview

Introduced in 2001, ‘Zorija Rose’ is a distinct magenta rose sweet pea botanically classified as a Grandiflora. Because it was introduced relatively recently, it falls specifically into the category of a “Modern Grandiflora.” It is a wonderful choice for gardeners and florists who desire the intoxicating, complex perfume of antique heirlooms while benefiting from the longer stems produced through modern breeding.

Growth Habit

As a Grandiflora type, ‘Zorija Rose’ features a traditional plain standard petal and a “clamped keel,” meaning the lower petals tightly enclose the reproductive parts of the flower. While its blooms are slightly smaller than the massive, ruffled Spencer types, the plant grows informally and produces an enormous abundance of flowers, often becoming completely covered in blooms. It also benefits from modern breeding, producing noticeably longer stems that are more useful for cutting than true 19th-century heirloom varieties.

Cultivation Notes

For best root development, start seeds in deep pots or root trainers rather than shallow trays. When young plants have developed four or five leaves and are approximately 3–4 inches tall, pinch out the growing tips to encourage strong basal shoots and create sturdier, more vigorous vines.

Historical Notes

Although the exact breeder of ‘Zorija Rose’ remains unknown, its 2001 introduction reflects the renewed interest in Grandiflora sweet peas at the turn of the century. Throughout much of the 20th century, breeders focused heavily on producing the largest possible ruffled Spencer flowers, sometimes at the expense of the intense, spicy fragrance that originally made sweet peas famous. ‘Zorija Rose’ belongs to a newer generation of breeding aimed at restoring that rich heritage perfume while maintaining the strong stem length needed by modern growers and florists.

In the Garden

‘Zorija Rose’ is especially valued for:

  • Intense, complex fragrance in the garden
  • Cut flower production and floral design work
  • Heritage, romantic, and cottage garden aesthetics

Companion Planting Notes

Its vivid magenta-rose coloring pairs beautifully with softer cream and blush varieties for a more romantic palette, or can be used as a dramatic jewel-toned contrast alongside deep navy blues such as ‘Lord Nelson’ and rich purple sweet peas.
