Sweet Pea Seed Drying in Bags on a clothes airer

Preserving the Perfume: A Home Gardener’s Guide to Sweet Pea Seed Storage

For many home gardeners, the satisfaction of growing sweet peas includes preserving a favorite variety to plant again in future seasons. However, storing seeds incorrectly is the quickest way to lose them, as their ability to sprout declines very rapidly if they are simply left in a paper packet at room temperature.

To ensure your collection remains viable for years to come, you should utilize a method discovered by the world-renowned breeder Dr. Keith Hammett: cold storage in a domestic freezer.

Why Freezer Storage Works

When maintained in these freezing conditions, sweet pea seeds can remain fertile and ready to grow almost indefinitely.

How to Prepare Seeds for Storage

Before you put them away, it is vital to make sure your harvested seeds are bone dry by spreading them out in a warm, well-ventilated location. Once they are completely free of moisture, place them into a zipped plastic bag to provide an airtight seal that protects them from the elements.

Label and Organize Your Collection

To keep your library organized, always include a label inside the bag or write directly on the plastic with the name of the variety and the date they were collected.

You should also be aware that "white" or cream-colored seeds are particularly delicate; their thinner outer coatings make them much more susceptible to rotting if they are exposed to dampness during storage or initial sowing.

Protect Seeds from Pests and Accidental Ingestion

While you are preparing your seeds for the freezer, keep them in a secure location to protect them from mice and birds, as these pests are notoriously fond of eating them.

Finally, because sweet pea seeds are toxic, it is imperative to store your zipped bags in a clearly labeled container that is well out of the reach of children and pets.
