Sweet peas love cooler weather and will give you lots of sumptuous flowers if planted in time to enjoy those cooler temperatures. Generally, you can aim to start your sweet pea seeds eight weeks BEFORE the last frost date in your area.
In the South, Southwest or areas with hot summers, start and plant your sweet pea seeds in the autumn.
In moderate climates you have a much bigger window for planting where you can plant out your sweet peas between October to April.
In areas with cold winters where (snow stays on the ground) and hot summers, start your sweet pea seedlings in an unheated greenhouse, cold frame or outside in a protected area. Sweet peas do well about 23F so keep an eye on temperatures and if necessary add frost cloth to keep the seedlings a little warmer.
